If you’ve been doing some research on instant cameras, you’ll have probably seen both the Fuji Instax Mini 8 and the Polaroid PIC-300. They look kinda similar, so what’s the difference?

First of all, here’s what’s the same:

Shutter SpeedFixed 1/60 secFixed 1/60 sec

Picture Size (with border)2.4″ x 1.8″2.4″ x 1.8″
Shots per film1010
Batteries4 x AA2 x AA

Apart from the physical styling they appear to be the same camera under the skin. The film is also interchangeable between them both – plenty of people successfully use the Fuji film in the Polaroid camera (as it’s cheaper).

There are actually 2 differences in the basic operation:

  1. The Polaroid PIC-300 is turned on by pulling the lens out, whereas the Fuji Mini 8 has a small button next to the lens which turns it on (by popping out the lens).
  2. The Polaroid’s exposure control is on the top of the camera, whereas the Fuji has a twist dial around the lens.

There is 1 feature of the Fuji Mini 8 which the Polaroid lacks – a 5th exposure setting called Hi-Key to make the pictures brighter.

The only other difference is that the Polaroid takes 4 x AA batteries and the Fuji Instax takes 2.

Conclusion

When comparing the Polaroid PIC-300 vs the Fuji Instax Mini 8 there is really only 1 main difference between the 2 which is the Hi-Key exposure option on the Fuji. They are functionally the same in every other way.
